En 1851, un petit instituteur laïc commence sa carrière dans une école de rang. Urgel-Eugène Archambault a la bonne idée de s'inscrire ensuite à l’École normale Jacques-Cartier, qui ouvre ses portes à Montréal en 1857. Muni d’un diplôme que peu d'enseignants peuvent se targuer de posséder, il est nommé, deux ans plus tard, instituteur à la Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal (CECM).
