La vie de N. de Staël (1914-1955) dont la carrière s'étale sur 15 ans à partir de 1940 et compte plus de 1.000 oeuvres. Il fut influencé par Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Fernand Léger et Chaim Soutine mais aussi par les maîtres flamands tels que Rembrandt, Vermeer et Hercules Seghers. Dès 1942, il rompit avec la peinture figurative et opta pour une abstraction radicale.
