Composé en 44 av. J.-C., sous le règne de César, ce traité est l'un des derniers écrits de Cicéron. Sous la forme d'un dialogue entre Caton l'Ancien, le célèbre consul et juriste romain, et deux jeunes hommes, il expose les grandes vertus morales en réfutant les accusations portées contre la vieillesse. L'ouvrage exerça une forte influence sur les humanistes de la Renaissance.
